commence the seasonal activities

No, the weather hasn't gotten the memo that it's fall now, but I'm not complaining. Visiting an apple orchard in 80 degree weather is fine with me. Fun fact: the Hudson Valley, where I live, is known as the Apple Belt of New York!

My mom and I were both hanging around while everyone else was at work yesterday, so we decided to visit nearby Barton Orchards. It's always PACKED with people coming up from NYC for the day, and it's a liiiittle more commercial than the farms that I usually prefer to visit, but we had a great time.

This is where you walk in. That bridge is for the goats to get from the pen on one side to the other. I think it's hilarious that the goats get to be so high up.

From where the orchards are, you can get a good view of the farm from higher up.  You can see the mountains in the distance - I think that's the West Mountain State Forest.

Hay ride was as expected... Itchy and uncomfortable. But it was a good way to get a tour of the farm!

Pumpkins! They don't have any to pick, but they're all laid out in the field to choose from.

We didn't pick any apples, but we went into the store and bought some baked goods, fudge, cider, and apple crisp mix. They sell mostly local items. On the farm there is also a bakery, ice cream station, donut shop, coffee place, etc. All kinds of stuff to buy! It feels a little bit like a fair. There's even a bar:

I couldn't leave without trying the hard apple cider they had on tap, so to get out of the heat for a while, my mom and I shared a cup of cider and listened to the country music blaring in the tap room.

I've tried Angry Orchard apple cider, which you may have heard of before (it's made here in the Hudson Valley!), and it was not my favorite.  Instead I went for the Stella Artois "hard cidre," which was amazing! Imagine the taste of a green apple Jolly Rancher mixed with the bubbliness of champagne, cold and fizzy and sweet like sparkling cider, but taken up a notch. Highly recommend, gets my seal of approval. :)

I picked up a bag of apples from the supermarket on our way home (yes, after spending the afternoon at an apple orchard... sue me) and finished the day by making an apple crisp with the mix we bought at the farm.

NONE of the pictures I took of the finished product look appetizing, unfortunately, but I promise it was good (and it was super easy to make).

Hope you're all having a wonderful Sunday! I'm busy with school and work this week, but I hope to keep up my blogging streak as much as I can. ;)

quick update: blog recommendations and mug exchangin'

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I want to be a little more consistent about reading blogs I follow and posting, so I've started using/claimed my blog on Bloglovin' (whatever that means, haha). For anyone who stumbles across my blog, I really just plan on posting about my experiences and thoughts in my free time; I don't have a "niche." I'm looking to follow more blogs of all kinds, so please let me know about your favorite blogs (or even your own blog!) so that I can expand my reading list!

Also, yesterday I received the info on the person I'm sending a mug to  in the Enchanting Rose 11th Tea Cup & Mug Exchange - I'm super excited to get out at some point and make up a fun package!

That's it, just a quick update. :)

Comment your favorite blog/s and let me know about your own blog, too!

I'll hold onto summer as long as I can, but once the first day of autumn is here, I'm ALL ABOUT fall!

I always work on Fridays, but I just so happened to have switched with a coworker and had the day off. I also didn't have much homework because a couple of my classes are on a break for Rosh Hashanah. I had almost a whole day free, and since it's been such a gorgeous day, I tried to take as much advantage of it as I could!

spillin' the tea on anxiety: symptoms & meds

From reading previous posts, maybe you already know that I'm on a mini quest for handling an anxiety problem. Here's a little insider knowledge on that corner of my life, in case there's someone out there who can relate, or wants to hear that there's a person out there who knows how you feel.

Early last year, I started to struggle more and more with anxiety.

tea cup and mug exchange 2017

It's the last day to sign up for the mug exchange, and I reentered the blog world just in time to participate!

a few months later

It's so weird how sometimes, in the space of 6 months, nothing changes at all, but other times, so much changes???

Innisfree Gardens back in May
I have some stories and pictures to share from the time since I last wrote, so enjoy a look back and a grab bag of personal thoughts and snapshots...

travelling + spring break coming soooooon.....

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't really care for vacations.  I'm excited to leave for Florida this weekend, but honestly, vacations and travelling are a couple of things that cause me the most stress.   But vacations are one of those things that I think that are worth wrestling with the anxiety over, because it's a good experience usually, and I'm going with cool people.  Nothing I can't handle with some prayer, my sketchbook journal, and maybe a little wine.

spring break rail adventure 2017?!

Spring Break approacheth.

A bunch of us are headed to Hollywood for a few days.  In Florida, because apparently there's a Hollywood in Florida.  COOL.

Everyone is taking a 3-hour flight to get down there.  Not me!  I'm turning my dread of plane travel into checking something off my bucket list: I'm going to take a train.

before the snow melts

I wanted to test some things with my camera  (specifically to find out if I really need to always only take massive .raw pictures... the answer is no).  So I went out during the golden hour yesterday to mess around a little bit.  We had a nor'easter blow through this week, so it's pretty snowy and slushy, but it was sunny and kind of warm yesterday and everything is starting to melt, making for a really pretty evening.

books i read this month || january 2017

I opened an account on Goodreads again and have been carefully keeping track of the books I'm reading this year.  This month I read only non-fiction.  Here are the three books I read in 2017, as well as a short synopsis and review of each...

first day of school

I STILL get excited about the first day of school!  And this one is all-around maybe the most exciting, because I'm at a new school and I have a new major and it's been way too long since I exercised these educational muscles.  Essays, tests, assignments, discussions, quizzes, readings, textbooks; all so stressful, but I can't deny that the productivity gives me a buzz like nothing else.

when & why i started this blog

I recently took a look at my oldest posts on this blog, just out of curiosity.  It's been around for about 2 years and 3 months.  If this blog was a child it would be able to walk and talk; thankfully this blog is not a child, since I neglect it for months at a time!

Anyway, I wanted to revisit my purpose for this blog, and maybe check out what's been going on in my life over that time, including some goofy selfies for illustrative purposes. ;)

defining moments of my college education

Since I begin classes in a week, at a whole new university, I've been thinking recently about my five semesters at community college: the courses I took, the professors I met there, the memories...  I'd like to share some of my most important moments college!

has sherlock jumped the shark?

I had another post lined up for today, but I can't ignore what's been bothering me since last night, so I think I'm going to write about it.  You're going to see my nerdier side, because although I avoid fandoms, I do have a fangirl button and it has been PUSHED.

i needed this

First haircut of the year.  I dread getting going to the hair salon; it's a stressful experience!  But I sucked it up today.

back to school (again)

Exciting news: I'm going back to school.  I took a sort of "gap year" between getting my associate's degree and beginning my bachelor's degree, so I'm a little apprehensive of how it'll be to be back in college full time, even though I'll be a fully online student.

Anyway, as a distance learner, the biggest way I'm preparing for the first day of classes is by getting my work space ready.  Really all I need is a clean desk and good supplies/stationary.  Today I went out and purchased a couple of items as a kind of "back-to-school" mini haul, and I think it would be fun to share the things I got.  :)

January 11, 2017

have you tried turning it off and on again?

Let's get philosophical and talk about all of 2016 as if it had any kind of discernible pattern!

the newest of years (video)

Another video whoop

I had this big idea to make a video every week using short video clips I took every day, similar to this one I made for the first week of 2017, but I am not the type of person who has their phone or camera always ready to capture moments.  So this can be a special thing.  Maybe I'll do one for the last week of the year and compare them?  Or something.  :)

my year in pictures 2016 (video)

I'm reanimating this dead blog to convince you to be interested in a bunch of pictures I took in 2016 set to melancholy music.  Here it is:

I may do something similar next year... :)
